Trapping of single atoms in cavity QED
By integrating the techniques of laser cooling and trapping with those of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), single Cesium atoms have been trapped within the mode of a small, high finesse optical cavity in a regime of strong coupling. The observed lifetime for individual atoms trapped within the cavity mode is τ ≈ 28ms, and is limited by fluctuations of light forces arising from the far-detu...
متن کاملTrapping of single atoms with single photons in cavity QED
Two recent experiments have reported the trapping of individual atoms inside optical resonators by the mechanical forces associated with single photons @Hood et al., Science 287, 1447 ~2000!; Pinkse et al., Nature ~London! 404, 365 ~2000!#. Here we analyze the trapping dynamics in these settings, focusing on two points of interest. First, we investigate the extent to which light-induced forces ...
متن کاملCooling and trapping Strontium atoms
We performed the simultaneous trapping of two isotopes (86Sr and 88Sr) in the red MOT (N.Poli et al. Phys. Rev. A 71, 061403(R) (2005)). Thanks to the low temperature obtained in the red MOT, such isotopic mixture is efficiently transferred into a FORT. We observe fast interspecies thermalization in the dipole trap which allows one to set a lower bound of 70aB on the 86Sr-88Sr elastic cross sec...
متن کاملElectromagnetic trapping of cold atoms
This review describes the methods of trapping cold atoms in electromagnetic fields and in the combined electromagnetic and gravity fields. We discuss first the basic types of the dipole radiation forces used for cooling and trapping atoms in the laser fields. We outline next the fundamentals of the laser cooling of atoms and classify the temperature limits for basic laser cooling processes. The...
متن کاملLaser Trapping of Radioactive Atoms
Light forces acting on radioactive atoms confine them in very dense and cold samples achieving large phase space density. We describe the processes of radioactive atom production, reduction of their velocity and capture. The trapped atoms form excellent sources for the study of atomic parity non-conservation, β decay asymmetry, other weak force processes, and α decay asymmetry.
